Testing & Quality — How to Sleep at Night
You've built something. It runs. It looks right. You click around, everything works.
Ship it?
Not yet. Because "it works when I click around" is the most dangerous sentence in software. It means you've tested one path, one time, under ideal conditions. Your users will find the other 47 paths. Usually on a Friday night. Usually when you're asleep.
This chapter is about building a safety net — a set of automated checks that verify your software works correctly, every time, without you having to click around manually. Engineers call this testing, and it's the difference between shipping with confidence and shipping with crossed fingers.
The Bridge You Drive Across
Imagine a civil engineer designs a bridge. The math checks out. The blueprints look beautiful. The construction crew finishes on time and under budget. Would you drive your car across that bridge if nobody had tested it with actual weight? If nobody had shaken it to simulate wind? If nobody had poured water on it to simulate rain? You would not. No sane person would. Yet this is what shipping untested software is: asking users to drive across a bridge that has never been load-tested.
Every physical structure in the world goes through rigorous testing before humans interact with it. Elevators are stress-tested to 125% of their rated capacity. Airplane wings are bent until they snap (on purpose, in a lab) to verify they can handle turbulence far beyond anything a real flight would encounter. Car crash tests destroy hundreds of vehicles before a single model reaches a showroom.
Software is more fragile than any of these, because it changes every week. An engineer doesn't rebuild half the bridge every Sprint. But a software team does — they add features, fix bugs, refactor code, update dependencies. Each change is an opportunity for something to break. Testing is the process of catching those breaks before your users do.
In 2012, Knight Capital Group deployed a software update to their stock trading system. The code had a bug that wasn't caught by testing. In 45 minutes, the bug executed millions of unintended trades. The company lost $440 million. Not over months. Not over weeks. In less time than it takes to watch an episode of a TV show. The company never recovered. One untested code change. $440 million. Gone.[1]
What Is a Test?
A test (in software) is code that checks whether other code behaves correctly. That sounds circular, so here's what it means in practice:
You have a function that adds two numbers. A test would call that function with inputs like 2 + 3 and check that the answer is 5. If the function returns 5, the test passes. If someone later breaks the function (maybe during a refactor) and it starts returning 6, the test fails — and the developer knows immediately, before users see incorrect math.

That's the entire idea. Everything else in this chapter is variations on this core concept: call the code, check the answer, scream if it's wrong.
Three Levels of Testing: Bricks, Walls, and Buildings
Not all tests are created equal. Some test a single, tiny piece of code. Others test whether large pieces work together. Others test the entire application from the user's perspective. These levels form a hierarchy, and understanding that hierarchy is one of the most important concepts in software quality.
Imagine you're constructing a building. You can test at three levels. First, you test each individual brick — is it the right size? Is it strong enough? Does it crumble under pressure? That's a unit test. Second, you test whether the bricks form a solid wall when mortared together — does the wall stand? Is it plumb? Can it bear weight? That's an integration test. Third, you test the entire building — can people walk through the doors? Does the plumbing work? Does the elevator reach every floor? That's an end-to-end test (abbreviated E2E).
Unit Tests: Testing One Brick
A unit test checks a single function or a small piece of logic in isolation. The word "unit" means "one thing." You're testing one brick at a time.

});Each test checks one behavior. Each runs in milliseconds. You can run thousands of unit tests in seconds. This speed is their superpower — you get instant feedback on whether your code is correct.
Integration Tests: Testing the Wall
An integration test checks whether multiple pieces work together correctly. The word "integration" means "combining parts into a whole."
Consider the UPI payment flow on PhonePe. The calculateTotal function works perfectly in isolation (unit test passes). The processPayment function works perfectly in isolation. But when calculateTotal passes its result to processPayment, does the format match? Does calculateTotal return a number like 499.00 while processPayment expects a string like "499.00"? Integration tests catch these mismatches — the places where individually perfect bricks don't fit together.

E2E Tests: Testing the Whole Building
An end-to-end test (or E2E test) simulates a real user interacting with the entire application. It opens a browser, clicks buttons, fills in forms, and checks that the right things appear on screen.

});E2E tests are the most realistic — they test what users actually experience. They're also the slowest (they need a real browser), the most expensive (they need infrastructure to run), and the most fragile (they break if you change a button's text or move an element on the page).
The Testing Pyramid
These three levels form a shape that every software team in the world knows: the testing pyramid. It's a guideline for how many of each type of test you should write.

Why this shape? Consider the math. If each unit test takes 5 milliseconds, each integration test takes 500 milliseconds, and each E2E test takes 10 seconds, then running 1,000 unit tests takes 5 seconds. Running 1,000 E2E tests takes nearly 3 hours. If your tests take 3 hours to run, developers stop running them. Tests that don't run are tests that don't exist. The pyramid shape keeps the total run time short enough that developers actually use the tests.
Mike Cohn introduced this concept in his 2009 book Succeeding with Agile, and it has become gospel at companies from Google to Stripe to Zerodha. Martin Fowler expanded on it extensively in his testing articles, emphasizing that the pyramid isn't about specific ratios — it's about the principle that your fastest, cheapest tests should form the foundation.[2]
TDD: Writing the Exam Before Studying
There's a practice in software engineering that sounds completely backwards: Test-Driven Development (TDD). The idea is that you write the tests before you write the code they test.
Imagine a teacher writes the final exam before designing the course syllabus. Sounds absurd? It's actually brilliant. By writing the exam first, the teacher knows exactly what students need to learn. Every lecture, every assignment, every reading is designed to ensure students can pass that exam. Nothing irrelevant gets taught. Nothing essential gets missed. TDD applies the same logic to code — by writing the test first, the developer knows exactly what the code needs to do. No more, no less.
Kent Beck — the programmer who popularized TDD in his 2002 book Test-Driven Development: By Example — described the process in three steps, which he called Red-Green-Refactor:[3]
- Red: Write a test for behavior that doesn't exist yet. Run it. It fails (red) — because the code hasn't been written.
- Green: Write the minimum amount of code needed to make the test pass. Run the test. It passes (green).
- Refactor: Clean up the code — improve its structure, remove duplication — while keeping the test green.
Here's what that looks like in practice:

When he taught the technique, experienced developers were skeptical — "Why write a test for code that doesn't exist?" But teams that adopted TDD consistently reported fewer bugs in production and, counterintuitively, faster development times. The upfront investment in tests eliminated the debugging time that normally dominates the latter half of a project.[3]
TDD isn't for everyone, and it isn't for every situation. Writing tests first works well when you know what the code should do (business logic, calculations, data transformations). It works poorly when you're exploring and don't yet know what you're building (prototyping, UI experimentation). The pragmatic approach: use TDD for the core logic, skip it for the exploratory work.
The Testing Lifecycle: Where Tests Fit in Your Workflow
Tests don't live in isolation — they're woven into the development process at specific moments.

On every commit: Unit tests run locally. They take seconds. If they fail, the developer knows immediately.
On every pull request (PR): A CI system (Continuous Integration — a server that runs tests automatically when code is submitted) runs the full test suite, including integration and E2E tests. If tests fail, the PR cannot be merged into the main codebase. This prevents broken code from reaching other developers.
Before deployment: Smoke tests — a small set of critical tests — run against the staging environment (a copy of your production system used for final checks). They verify that the most important flows work: can a user sign up? Can they make a payment? Can they load the home page?
After deployment: Health checks — automated pings that continuously verify the live system is responding. If the homepage stops loading, the team gets an alert.
What to Test: The Pragmatic Reality
Here's where testing advice diverges from testing reality.
Textbooks say: test everything. Reality says: you have limited time and the feature was due yesterday. So what do you actually test?
The 80/20 rule for testing: Test the paths where bugs cause the most damage. Leave the trivial stuff alone.
What to always test:
- Money flows. Any code that calculates prices, processes payments, or handles subscriptions. A bug in your pricing logic loses revenue or overcharges users — both are catastrophic.
- Authentication. Can someone access admin pages without logging in? Can a regular user see another user's data? Security bugs don't get second chances.
- Core user journeys. The 3-5 paths that define your product. For a food delivery app: search → add to cart → checkout → track order. If any of those break, you don't have a product.
- Edge cases. What happens when the input is empty? What happens when the number is negative? What happens when the user submits the form twice? Edge cases are the dark corners where bugs breed.
What you can often skip:
- Static UI layouts. Testing that a heading says "Welcome" adds little value and breaks every time you change the copy.
- Third-party library internals. If you're using a date-picker library, trust that the library's maintainers tested it. Test how your code interacts with it, not the library itself.
- Prototype code. If you're exploring an idea and the code might be thrown away next week, testing it is premature. Test it when you commit to keeping it.
The pragmatic PM in you should recognize a familiar framework here: prioritization. You prioritize features by impact and effort. Prioritize tests the same way. A test for the payment flow (high impact, moderate effort) matters more than a test for the "About Us" page text (low impact, low effort). The best engineering teams don't test everything — they test the right things.
Code Coverage: The Metric That Lies
Every testing discussion eventually arrives at code coverage — a percentage that represents how much of your codebase is executed during tests. If you have 100 lines of code and your tests execute 80 of them, your coverage is 80%.
Tools like Istanbul (for JavaScript) or pytest-cov (for Python) measure this automatically. They show exactly which lines, functions, and branches your tests touch — and which ones they miss.
Sounds useful, right? It is. Until someone says: "Let's get to 100% coverage."
Why 100% coverage is a trap:
100% coverage means every line of code is executed during tests. It does not mean every line is tested correctly. Consider this:

But the test doesn't check the result (expect(result).toBe(5) is missing) and doesn't test the dangerous edge case (dividing by zero). The coverage number lies. It says "tested." The code says "I will crash in production when someone enters 0."
Martin Fowler, the renowned software engineer and author, puts it bluntly: "I would say you are doing enough testing if the following is true: you rarely get bugs that escape into production, and you are rarely hesitant to change some code for fear it will cause production bugs." He recommends treating coverage as a diagnostic tool — low coverage tells you something useful (you're under-tested), but high coverage doesn't tell you much (you might be over-tested in the wrong places).[4]
A reasonable coverage target for most teams: 70-85% on the core business logic. Some utility code and edge-case handlers might not be worth covering. Don't chase the number. Chase the confidence.
How the Best Teams Test
NASA: Where Failure Means Death
The software running the Mars Rovers — Spirit, Opportunity, Curiosity, Perseverance — has zero margin for error. There's no "push a hotfix" when your server is 225 million kilometers away.
NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory writes code with extreme rigor. For the Curiosity rover, the team wrote approximately 2.5 million lines of C code with exhaustive testing at every level. They use a practice called formal verification — mathematically proving that code behaves correctly under all possible inputs, not testing with examples. Every function has a specification. Every specification has a proof. Tests run for weeks before code is approved.[5]
You don't need NASA-level rigor for a CRUD app. But the lesson transfers: the more critical the system, the more testing it deserves. Your payment flow deserves more rigor than your "About" page. Your authentication flow deserves more rigor than your notification preferences.
Google: Testing at Planet Scale
Google runs millions of tests every single day. Their internal CI system executes roughly 150 million test cases daily across their codebase. In their widely-referenced paper "Software Engineering at Google" (2020), they describe a testing culture built on three principles:[6]
- Write tests or don't submit code. Google's code review system blocks submissions that don't include tests for new behavior. This isn't a suggestion — it's enforced by tooling.
- Small tests, not big tests. Google's internal guidance pushes engineers toward small (unit-level) tests that run in under a second. They explicitly discourage large tests unless absolutely necessary.
- Test the contract, not the implementation. Tests should verify what a function does, not how it does it internally. This means tests don't break when someone refactors the internals — they only break when the behavior changes.
Stripe: Testing Money
Stripe processes hundreds of billions of dollars in payments annually. A bug in their code doesn't break a feature — it moves money to the wrong place. Their testing approach reflects this gravity:
- Every payment flow has E2E tests that run against a sandboxed version of their system.
- They maintain a comprehensive test mode — the same system that processes real payments, but with fake money. Every Stripe user has access to this test mode through test API keys, which means Stripe's customers also test their own payment integrations before going live.
- They practice chaos engineering — intentionally breaking parts of their infrastructure (killing servers, introducing network latency) to verify the system degrades gracefully rather than catastrophically.
Notice the pattern: NASA, Google, and Stripe don't test because some book told them to. They test because the cost of not testing — lost Mars rovers, broken search results, misrouted billions — is unacceptable. When you decide what to test in your own project, ask yourself: "What happens if this breaks?" If the answer is "nothing much," testing is optional. If the answer is "we lose users, data, or money," testing is mandatory.
Testing with AI: Your New Superpower
Here's the good news for non-traditional builders: AI coding tools are exceptionally good at writing tests. This is one of the areas where AI assistance provides the highest leverage, because tests follow predictable patterns.
You describe what a function should do. The AI generates tests that verify every behavior, including edge cases you might not think of. It's like having a quality assurance engineer on call 24 hours a day.
Prompt to Claude Code:
"Write comprehensive tests for the applyDiscount function. Cover normal
cases, edge cases (0% discount, 100% discount), and error cases
(negative discount, discount over 100, negative price). Use Jest."
Claude Code will generate 8-12 tests covering scenarios you specified and scenarios you didn't think of. Review the tests — they serve as documentation of how the function should behave.
This changes the economics of testing. Writing tests used to be the task developers dreaded most — tedious, time-consuming, unglamorous. With AI tools, you can generate a solid test suite in minutes and spend your time reviewing and refining it rather than writing it from scratch.
You're going to write tests for a bookstore API that manages a collection of books. Each book has a title, author, and price.
Step 1: Create a new project folder and initialize it.

- addBook(title, author, price) — adds a book, returns the book object with an ID

- searchBooks(query) — returns all books whose title contains the query (case insensitive)
- applyDiscount(id, percent) — applies a discount to a book's price, returns updated book
Store books in memory (a plain array). Don't use a database.
Also set up Jest for testing.
Step 3: Now ask Claude Code to write tests:
Write comprehensive tests for the bookstore module. For each function, test:
1. The normal/happy path (it works as expected)
2. Edge cases (empty strings, zero price, 100% discount)
3. Error cases (book not found, invalid discount percentage)
Use descriptive test names that explain what is being verified.
Step 4: Run the tests:
npx jestStep 5: Review the output. You should see a list of passing (green) and possibly failing (red) tests. If any fail, read the error message — it tells you exactly what went wrong. Ask Claude Code to fix the failures.
Step 6: Break something on purpose. Open the bookstore module and change the applyDiscount function to return the wrong value. Run the tests again. Watch them catch your mistake. That's the safety net in action.
Bonus: Ask Claude Code to add code coverage reporting (npx jest --coverage) and examine which lines aren't tested.
What You've Learned
Testing is the practice of writing code that verifies other code works correctly. It's the safety net that lets you change your software without fear.
The key ideas:
- Tests are automated checks. They call your code with known inputs and verify the outputs match expectations. When they fail, something broke.
- Three levels of testing. Unit tests check individual functions (fast, cheap, many). Integration tests check connections between components (moderate). E2E tests check the full user experience (slow, expensive, few).
- The testing pyramid. Many unit tests at the base, fewer integration tests in the middle, fewest E2E tests at the top. This shape keeps your test suite fast and useful.
- TDD (Test-Driven Development) means writing tests before code. Red (write a failing test) → Green (write code to pass it) → Refactor (clean up). It produces clearer, more focused code.
- Test what matters. Money flows, authentication, core journeys, edge cases. Don't chase 100% coverage — chase confidence.
- Code coverage measures which lines your tests execute. Useful as a diagnostic, dangerous as a target. High coverage does not mean high quality.
- AI tools are excellent at writing tests. Use them to generate comprehensive test suites, then review and refine.
The Knight Capital story from the beginning of this chapter had a specific cause: the deployment process reused a flag from old, decommissioned code. A single integration test — verifying that the deployment activated the correct module — would have caught it. $440 million, saved by a test that would have taken an hour to write.
You can't test everything. You shouldn't try. But the things that matter — the flows that touch money, data, and trust — deserve a safety net.
Build the net. Then sleep at night.
